Ask President-Elect Barack Obama to Support BGLT Rights!

Our first principle, the inherent worth and dignity of every person calls on us as Unitarian Universalists to support bisexual, gay, lesbian and transgender (BGLT) rights.

Let President Barack Obama know how you feel about BGLT rights and what you think he should do to safeguard equality.

Dear Mr. President,

As a Unitarian Universalist, I urge you to support bisexual, gay, lesbian and transgender (BGLT) rights during your candidacy and possible presidency. My belief in the inherent worth and dignity of every person guides me in my strong opposition to discrimination against the BGLT community.

As my future President, I would like you to protect the rights of the BGLT community in the following ways:

1) Support legislation, such as the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2007, to provide federal support and funding to state and local law enforcement as they investigate violent hate crimes;

2) Support legislation, such as the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in the workplace;

3) Support legislation, such as the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, to repeal the current ban on military service by openly lesbian, gay and bisexual Americans, commonly referred to as “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell;” And

4) Grant full and equal access to civil marriage for same-sex couples.

I strongly urge you to do everything you can to enact these reforms.  I stand on the side of love and I invite you to join me.
