The UN Must Send An Envoy to Free Aung San Suu Kyi Now

Aung San Suu Kyi is facing charges for a cime she did not commit.  Urge UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon to send an envoy to Burma immediately to work for her release.  Burma's military regime cannot be allowed to keep Aung San Suu Kyi locked-up forever.

Dear Secretary General Ban Ki-moon,

I call on the UN to take immediate action to secure the release of Aung San Suu Kyi, who is being detained in Burma's notorious Insein prison for crimes she did not commit.

I urge you to take firm action by sending an envoy immediately to deliver a strong message to the Burmese regime calling for the immediate release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all of Burma’s political prisoners.

Aung San Suu Kyi is being tried for breaking the terms of her house arrest after an American man swam across Inya Lake uninvited to her house. Aung San Suu Kyi is the victim of a crime, not the perpetrator. There was an intruder in her house who refused to leave. Now, she is imprisoned in Insein prison just two weeks shy of the date that her current 6-year house arrest term was set to expire.

Aung San Suu Kyi has spent a total of more than 13 years in detention during the past 20 years. The United Nations has ruled that Aung San Suu Kyi’s detention is illegal under international law, and also under Burmese law. The United Nations Security Council has also told the dictatorship that they must release Aung San Suu Kyi.

I urge you to act now. The regime cannot be permitted to keep Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi detained forever.

Sincerely,
