Dear Member of Congress,

I am writing to urge you to ban meat and milk from cloned animals and their offspring from entering the food supply.

The FDA’s approval of cloned animals for human consumption is irresponsible in light of concerns about the process’ impact on animal health and the insufficient research on eating meat or drinking milk from cloned animals.

Many consumers have moral and ethical concerns about cloning, as well as concerns about the food safety and animal welfare impacts of this controversial technology. The FDA released their preliminary risk assessment in December and received over 150,000 public comments opposing the unlabeled introduction of meat and milk from animal clones.

In addition to disregarding public concerns, FDA is also blatantly disregarding directions from Congress. Just last month, the Senate passed the farm bill and the entire Congress passed the omnibus appropriations bill.  Both included provisions urging FDA to do more studies on cloning before final approval is given.  But rather than listening to Congress and acting in the public interest, the federal agency is caving in to industry pressure.

Congress has a duty to take adequate steps to protect the safety of the public, and this can be achieved by banning all milk and meat from cloned animals and their offspring from the food supply.   I hope that you will take these steps to protect consumers.
