Destruction and Frustration in New York/New Jersey

Monday, World Can't Wait Steering Committee member Elaine Brower wrote:

"It is really so damn frustrating! Today marks 8 days after Hurricane Sandy made Staten Island ground zero of destruction and devastation. Trying to help is like one ant building an ant hill."

Destruction in Staten Island

Note from Debra:

Meanwhile, the trials of courageous protesters against "stop and frisk" continue: back to business in New York. Some interesting developments yesterday, though, as one of the jurors who experienced an unwarranted "stop and frisk" Monday (after joining the jury) was removed from the trial, causing the DA to call for a mistrial! Dear Supporter,

Before the election, on Tuesday, World Can't Wait Steering Committee member Dennis Loo wrote:

The U.S. president will carry forward a covert and quite probably overt war upon Iran and the other nations that are being occupied by U.S. forces, the privatization of core parts of the New Deal will continue, the gap between the 1% and the rest of us will grow wider and wider, global warming’s catastrophic impact on the planet will accelerate, devastating larger and larger swaths of the globe, women, minorities, LGBT folks, and immigrants will continue to catch hell, education will remain under siege from the privateers, the rule of law will be more and more openly replaced by executive actions and dissent will be further criminalized.

What will also continue and increase will be the basis for people to rise in protest and seek another world than the terrible one that those in charge of us are presiding over...

Last night, Curt Wechsler wrote:
If there’s one thing that yesterday’s exercise in electoral politics demonstrates, it’s the extent to which addiction to a “lesser of two evils” mindset guarantees progression of the fascist state in America.

The endorsement of war crimes represented by a vote for either of the dominant parties is a tough pill to swallow for people of conscience. It is vital at this particular moment to renew resistance to a “new normal” of endless war and disregard for fundamental human rights. And to demand re-commitment of activists to stop the continuing crimes of their government .

That which we refuse to resist…

Jill McLaughlin added:
To say that it has always been a choice of two evils as a reason to endorse a proven war criminal for fear of losing your right as a woman or an lgbt person doesn't speak to the reality and in fact flies in the face of  reality. Obama spent his first four years "finding common ground" with the Christian right that more ground was actually ceded to them and at the same time committed egregious crimes against the people of the world. To say that it has always been a choice of two evils and vote for more of this out of fear lacks thought and imagination...one should ask themselves does it have remain that way and what can I do to change that?

What do you think about what's next? As we are gathering more reports and commentary, we hope you'll join a special conference call tonight organized by Cindy Sheehan:

On Thursday, November 8th, 8pm to 9pm Eastern,  Cindy Sheehan's Soapbox is sponsoring a National Community Conference Call with Glen Ford, the Executive Editor of the Black Agenda Report, the most consistently honest and courageous voice of dissent against Obama/Empire from the black left intelligentsia. Glen's blog can be accessed here.

Joining us in the 2nd half will be Debra Sweet, the Director of World Can't Wait. World Can't Wait has also been a consistent opponent of Empire no matter who is leading it.

As of this writing (Monday, Nov. 5) we don't know who will "win" the election tomorrow but Glen Ford and Cindy Sheehan invite you to participate in this  conference call to hear their analysis of the 2012 Presidential Elections and, no matter who wins, where do we as peace and justice advocates/activists go now?

If you have a question for Glen, please email Cindy at
CindySheehansSoapbox@gmail.com
Call in number: 218-632-0995
Access Code: 73223#

You will be asked to mute your phone if you're not speaking. [It's TWO hours earlier than our usual call.  We will be back on schedule for Thursday November 15 & 29, and will not have a call on November 22 because of the holiday.] JOIN THE
FACEBOOK GROUP FOR PRE-CALL DISCUSSION. This call will be recorded to be played on Cindy Sheehan's Soapbox.

Kevin Gosztola writes in Obama’s Re-Election: What His Campaign Slogan ‘Forward’ Really Meant & What It Means Now:

"The slogan of President Barack Obama’s re-election campaign was “Forward.” As progressives and others celebrate his victory, they need to take a moment to soberly reflect on the reality that his second term will be marked by advancing policies that he helped institutionalize or allowed to become further entrenched—some of which picked up on expanding executive power where President George W. Bush left off in 2008.

"...forward—a one-word slogan for business as usual which public relations experts known as campaign advisors and staff employed—should be a understood as warning to us all that Obama has no intention of revisit the institutionalization, entrenchment or continuation of alarming national security policies. They will all continue if we let his popularity or perceived goodness silence and immobilize us, as it did through most of his re-election campaign."

From the Chicago Chapter of World Can't Wait... Four More Years? Tell It to The Victims of These Crimes:

In talking among ourselves at our last Chicago World Can't Wait meeting, we were struck by all the critical issues that didn't get talked about at the debates and the things that Romney praised Obama for during those same debates. What was brought into sharp focus for people of conscience is the fact that these elections do not reflect the interests of the majority of humanity...much of it seems to be about getting the people of this country to go along with the crimes of our government. In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, government officials are talking about how to adapt to climate change. They're not talking about how to stop it! On the World Can't Wait national conference call last week, we were reminded of the line from the original Call to Drive Out the Bush Regime: "That which you do not resist and mobilize to stop, you will learn or be forced to accept."

Whether or not you can join the call on Thursday night,
send Debra your thoughts.
