Please vote for the Toxics-Free Babies and Toddlers Act

Dear Senator

You will soon be asked to vote on an extremely important bill that will protect our most vulnerable population -- infants and toddlers -- from a known toxic material, bisphenol-A or BPA.

Senator Pavley's SB 797, the Toxics-Free Babies and Toddlers Act, requires all baby bottles, children's drinking cups, formula cans, and baby food jars sold in California to be essentially free of BPA.  It passed two policy committees and is pending on the Senate Floor.

The science is clear -- BPA is dangerous to growing bodies, implicated in diseases and problems such as diabetes, heart disease, neurological  disorders, and cancer.  Companies are starting to voluntarily take BPA out of their products because they see the writing on the wall.

The technology is clear -- there are safe substitutes for bottles, cups, and formula cans already on the market.  We support the ability of any parent to walk into a store and buy a safe product without doing research or reading the fine print.

The policy is clear --  the "Green Chemistry Initiative" is laudable, but will take years to implement.  BPA is a known and immediate threat to the half a million babies born each year in California right now!  Therefore California must lead now on behalf of our children and not wait for a regulatory process to unfold or for the federal government to act.

As your constituent and a supporter of the Environmental Working Group, I urge you to vote yes on SB 797!
