Dear Dr. Joan Denton and Dr. Mark Horton

I was concerned to hear about a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study that found the rocket fuel component perchlorate in 15 brands of powdered infant formula, including the nation's two leading brands.

The CDC scientists said that many infants drinking perchlorate-laced formula reconstituted with perchlorate-contaminated tap water would consume levels of the toxin exceeding the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) "safe" level.

I am particularly concerned because many scientists believe that EPA's "safe" level does not protect public health from this chemical, a known thyroid toxin that interferes with thyroid hormones crucial to brain development.  When scientists at California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) analyzed perchlorate, they recommended a lower "safe" level, which many experts believe is still too high to protect infants.

I want OEHHA to consider these new findings carefully when it revises its "safe" level, called a Public Health Goal, for perchlorate.  Then, as soon as possible, the California Department of Public Health must set stricter limits on perchlorate pollution to protect infants.
