During the 2008 election, the President and many Members of Congress acknowledged the harm that's been caused to the U.S. economy by trade agreements like NAFTA and pledged to find a better way forward on trade. The Trade Reform, Accountability, Development and Employment (TRADE) Act is comprehensive fair trade legislation, first introduced last year with the support of a wide range of labor, environmental, family farm, consumer and faith organizations. This important bill includes commonsense provisions like: * Establishing a process for reviewing and renegotiating existing trade agreements like NAFTA, CAFTA and the WTO * Setting mandatory criteria for future trade agreements regarding labor rights, the environment, food safety, intellectual property, public services, procurement, investment, agriculture, national security, states' rights, anti-dumping and dispute resolution * Reasserting Congressional authority and public overesight in trade policymaking Please use the form below to urge your Members of Congress and the president to support the TRADE Act and enact the trade reforms needed to get our economy back on track. Feel free to edit the letter below to share any personal stories about how existing trade agreements have negatively affected you and your family. |
