During the 2008 election, the President and many Members of Congress acknowledged the harm that's been caused to the U.S. economy by trade agreements like NAFTA and pledged to find a better way forward on trade. 

The Trade Reform, Accountability, Development and Employment (TRADE) Act is comprehensive fair trade legislation, first introduced last year with the support of a wide range of labor, environmental, family farm, consumer and faith organizations.  This important bill includes commonsense provisions like:

* Establishing a process for reviewing and renegotiating existing trade agreements like NAFTA, CAFTA and the WTO

* Setting mandatory criteria for future trade agreements regarding labor rights, the environment, food safety, intellectual property, public services, procurement, investment, agriculture, national security, states' rights, anti-dumping and dispute resolution

* Reasserting Congressional authority and public overesight in trade policymaking
