I'm going to use your donation tool with my own merchant account. What do I need to do?
In order to accept credit card donations online, you need to have the following two types of accounts:
(1) A gateway processor account (processes the credit cards)
(2) A merchant account (transfers and deposits the donations into your bank account)
If these terms don't sound familiar to you, we recommend this diagram which explains gateway/merchant accounts and how they work together!
How do I move forward?
Our system works with the following gateway processors:
-Authorize.net
-Payflow Pro (owned by PayPal - it used to be a Verisign product)
-YourPay/LinkPoint API (not the YourPay Connect product)
-PayPal Website Payment Pro.
Payflow Pro, Authorize.net, and YourPay/Linkpoint API all have recurring donation options that work with DIA donation pages. Payflow Pro is the only product whose recurring donation option exchanges all data seamlessly with our system. It is also the most expensive option.
We can provide a steep discount on Authorize.net gateway accounts, but the data exchange for recurring donations is not as seamless with our system (the same goes for YourPay/Linkpoint API gateway accounts). Please contact us directly for more information, or to obtain a discounted Authorize.net account.
If you use PayPal Website Payment Pro as your gateway processor, you won't need a separate merchant account. Our instructional guide is here. It's less expensive than the other options, but it's not the best processor and your donors will likely encounter more problems donating via this processor than with other services.
NOTE: If you choose YourPay/LinkPoint API as your gateway processor, in order for your donation pages to work properly you need to email us the digital certificate you get with that account so we can place it in an appropriate directory. If you choose Authorize.net, make sure to take your account out of "test" mode in order for it to work properly.
If you sign up with PayPal Payflow Pro, Authorize.net, or YourPay/LinkPoint as your gateway processor, you will also need a merchant account. Your bank may offer this option, and Merchant e-Solutions and Chase Paymentech are other options. Authorize.net and PayPal can also create a merchant account for you. If you want to be able to accept American Express and Discover, ask your merchant bank how to create accounts with these card companies.
Once I have these accounts, what's the next step?
Now you need to point your DIA account at your gateway account. To do this, log in to Salsa and click on 'account' on the right-hand side and then click on 'Merchant gateways'.
Give this account a name for your internal use, and choose the 'Account Type' from the drop-down box. Then enter your 'Account Username' and 'Account Password'.
NOTE: What constitutes your username and password depends on which processor you're using. See the documentation here for more specific information.
As above, for 'Account Signature', 'Account Partner', and 'Server'.
If you did not sign up for American Express and/or Discover accounts, check the 'Exclude' boxes next to them.
Do I have to enter any of my merchant account information into my HQ?
No - we don't need to know any of this information - your gateway processor information is all we need. Your processor is the entity that needs to know your merchant account information!
Can I accept donations yet?
Almost! Now you can create a new Donate page, and select this new 'Merchant Gateway' you've just created. When you're editing or creating a Donate page, select it in the Merchant Gateway field in step 2 of the donation page workflow.
Once you've saved this page, make sure to test it before you link it to your website. Click on the live link, enter your demographic information, $1.00 for the donation amount, and all '1's as the credit card number. Choose an expiration date sometime in the future, and enter all '1's for the 3-digit CVV2 code as well. This tests your donation page on our system. (Please note - this test won't work with PayPal's Website Payment Pro.)
You'll also want to test your page with a real credit card and a small (e.g., $1.00) donation to ensure that everything is working properly with your processor before making your page live.
