Chocolate consumers across the nation urge you to do the same by achieving Fair Trade certification for at least one of your lines of chocolate bars, representing at least 5% of your cocoa sourcing. The modest minimum 5% change in your cocoa sourcing that we are advocating would transform the lives of Fair Trade cocoa producing communities. Poverty stands in the way of school for children in Africa, Asia, and Latin America whose parents grow cocoa for chocolate companies like World’s Finest Chocolate. Fair Trade cocoa provides an alternative that allows children in cocoa-producing regions to afford to go to school, just as World’s Finest Chocolate fundraisers enable children in the United States to obtain a decent education. Your company has an opportunity for a win-win situation that will increase your sales and profits, while helping to eliminate the tragedy of child slavery and increasing the number of children of cocoa farmers who are able to attend school. As a consumer, I am even more likely to purchase a World’s Finest Chocolate fundraising bar if it has the Fair Trade Certified label. I know that a Fair Trade chocolate bar will open educational doors not only to the child standing on my doorstep selling chocolate bars, but also to children in other countries whose families work hard growing cocoa to set themselves on a sustainable path out of poverty and towards a vibrant economy for their communities. I also know that the Fair Trade label means that the cocoa will not be grown with the type of child trafficking and slavery that has plagued the cocoa industry for years. Slavery in the cocoa fields is absolutely unacceptable. I am aware of the industry protocol on child slavery and associated pilot projects and development work of which World’s Finest is a part. Though these are positive moves, none guarantees stable and sufficient income for cocoa farmers, which is the only way to end child slavery for good. Only Fair Trade guarantees the minimum price producers need and the independent certification consumers want. As a consumer, I should not have to take the time to write my chocolate company to remind you to eliminate child slavery and child labor from your chocolate bars. I expect prompt action.
